Sweden 1996-1997: Volvo V70 and V90 dominate

1997 Volvo V70

The Swedish car market booms over the period at +25%, going from 180,181 registrations in 1996 to 225,263 in 1997. The Volvo 850 gets progressively replaced by the S/V/C70, denoting the Sedan, Versatile (Station Wagon) and Coupe versions. Sales of all models are not split so the total adds up to a massive 22,299 sales or 12.4% share in 2006 and 25,972 or 11.5% in 2007.

At the same time, following the new naming structure Volvo has adopted, the 900 Series is relabelled S/V90 and overall sales of these models reach 13,220 in 1996 (7.3%) and 14,285 (6.3%) in 1997. The VW Golf is #3 in 1996 (5.1%) but drops to #6 in 1997, replaced on the podium by the Volvo S40/V40 at 11,182 sales (5%).

Given the fondness of the Swedish consumer for stations wagon, it is reasonable to assume that the two best selling models over 1996 and 1997 are the Volvo V70 and V90. Another interesting thing: this is the only time in 15 years that Volvo monopolises the podium.
