Europe 2001: VW Golf, Peugeot 206 and Fiat Punto on podium

The VW Golf celebrates its 18th year atop European car sales, but the task was a little bit harder this year. It leads with 659,500 units (-4%), that’s 35,000 sales or 0.2% market share above the Peugeot 206… The French heir of the legendary Peugeot 205 delivering what would end up being its best ever European year in terms of volume at 626,000 sales, up 12% on 2000 for a much deserved 2nd place.

Down just 7%, the Fiat Punto stays very solid in 3rd place in 2001 with 543,000 sales, just above the Ford Focus in constant progression at 540,300 units, up 3% and 1 spot. The Opel Astra is now #3 in its category and #5 overall with 501,000 sales (-13%). The BMW 3 Series impresses: it is up 2 spots at #8 with 340,000 sales (+3%).
