South Africa 2004-2005: Corolla #1, Citi Golf and Tazz in Top 5

The Toyota Corolla is the best selling vehicle in South Africa in 2004 and 2005.

The VW Citi Golf celebrates its 20th anniversary with a very solid 3rd position in 2005.

The South African market is euphoric in 2005, gaining 25% on 2004 to reach 537,605 registrations. The Toyota Corolla holds the pole position in the country over the period, establishing itself at 7.3% of the market during in the Full Year 2005 ranking. The VW Polo, boosted by its Classic (sedan) version, is #2 in 2005 with 32,781 sales and 6.1%, and the Toyota Hilux is stable at #4 (5.1%).

Two South African curiosities rank within the Top 5 during the period: the VW Citi Golf, #3 in 2005 with 27,928 sales (5.2%), is exclusive to South Africa and the region and is a restyled 1st generation Golf produced locally and launched in 1985 in the country.  The Toyota Tazz, also exclusive to the region (and very successful in neighbouring Botswana and Namibia) is a 1988 Toyota Corolla almost identical to the original. It ranks 4th in 2005 with 23,601 sales and 4.4% share.

The Toyota Tazz is a slightly amended 1988 Toyota Corolla hatchback.
