Europe 2005: VW Golf keeps Opel Astra at bay
In 2005, the VW Golf manages to keeps the title of best-selling car in Europe one more time, but it wasn’t easy. At 476,901 sales, down 14% on 2004, it lodges its lowest volume in 20 years and had to fight hard to stay on top.
In second place, the Opel Astra delivers a stellar year at 466,841 sales, up 28%. It grabs the monthly top spot in Europe for the first time in 6 years, and does it twice: in September (43,026 sales) and November (34,006 sales).
Rounding up a podium 100% made of compact cars for the first time ever in Europe, the Ford Focus rides on its substantial facelift to gain 3% and 2 spots at 409,320 units, kicking out of the podium two Peugeots: the 206 at #4 and -21% and the 307 at #5 and -17%. The VW Passat is up to #13 overall but #5 in December, and the Fiat Punto, helped by the Grande Punto launch, reappears in the Top 10 in December.
