Russia 2010: 30-year-old Lada 2105/2107 claims #1 spot

In 2010, the Russian car market was up 30% at 1,910,573 registrations, boosted by scrappage schemes that benefitted cheaper (and older) models.

The Lada 2105/2107, originally launched in 1979, doubled its sales this year at 136,006 (7.1% share) to reclaim the title of best selling car in Russia it held last in 2008. The Lada Priora drops 1 spot to #2 at 125,235 sales (+26%), followed by the Kalina (+1 spot and 79%) and Samara (- 2 spots, +13%).

First foreign model albeit produced locally, the Ford Focus is up 29% in 5th, passing the Renault Logan, up 17% in 6th. The Lada 4×4, launched in 1977, gained 2 spots in 7th with sales up 67%. The Opel Astra, #9 in December, is now established in the Top 10 (#12 in 2010, +61%). The biggest progressions go to the Kia Rio (#12 at +187%) and Chevrolet Cruze (#20 at +863%), and the best new model is the Renault Sandero at #19 in 2010 (19,232 sales), it is #12 in December.

The year was split in two: from January to May and continuing from its 2009 leadership, the Lada Priora was clear #1, then, as soon as the scrappage schemes kicked in in June, the Lada 2105/2107 took the lead. peaking at 10% in July. The end of year was tighter with Lada Kalina #1 in November and the Priora in December.
