I’m Matt, originally from France and now living in Sydney, Australia.

Following car sales numbers is a bit of a hobby for me, and I thought instead of keeping it to myself I should share it on a blog, so here it is! I hope you’ll enjoy it, feel free to leave comments if you have info to add or if you think of anything I could do better.

21 December 2010 update: I now cover all countries in the world with more than 1 million inhabitants except Mongolia, which I may have the chance to visit in 2011 so I want to keep it a surprise…

This corresponds to 154 countries, all listed on the right hand side of the page, so your country must be there!

You will see a few countries are listed that have less than 1m population (Iceland, Bhutan, Luxembourg), this is because I was able to get official data, and this takes priority over the population size.

Now, my goal for 2011: to add some historical data. I will start with France, the country I have the most information about, having lived there for 25 years. This will take a while so bear with me, I will post updates on the main page so you all know where to find the historical data.

Note: most car pictures come from Netcarshow and Autowp.ru

      Hi ausrutherford,
No not yet but I will keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

Love your blog, very interesting. Found it on TTAC. Do you have any sales data on the best selling cars in the individual states in the US? It would be interesting to know what sells in say the state of California as opposed to the state of New York. Any info like this would be appreciated. Thanks for your great work!

    • April 20, 2011 at 6:38 pm

      Hey Fred
Thanks for your praise! Glad to hear you are enjoying the blog.
Unfortunately as far as I know manufacturers do not publish state specific figures, they only flag when a particular model fares much better in a specific state, as it is the case for the Ford Fiesta in California currently… I will keep looking and definitely post if I find anything.

    Thank you for your time.

      Hi Kate,
If you click on this link you will have access to car sales in Ireland from 2007 to 2010. You can then adapt the search criteria to only look for Renault numbers year after year.

I love your website. I bet you get a ton of hits. I wouldn’t mind some ads on the site, and maybe others wouldn’t either… and if you added the ads then you could maybe make a little money from your hobby… just a thought.

    Thanks for the awesome site.

    • March 22, 2011 at 11:35 am

      Hey Eric,
Thanks very much!! Glad you’re enjoying the site. Yes the hits are growing steadily which is very exciting!
Are you talking about ads from an advertiser point of view or a consumer point of view?
Because yes indeed the next significant change on the layout of this site will probably be to include (discreet) ads… so any more thoughts you have on this is very welcome.
Thanks again, do feel free to come to me with any other suggestions/questions!

      • March 23, 2011 at 12:57 pm

        Hi Matt,

        You’re welcome.

You asked which point of view I’m coming from: I’m not telling you to put ads from an advertiser or a consumer point of view. I’m trying to tell you to put ads from your point of view, which is the content provider. It’s your hobby, but it’s helping many people: why not make a little money from it? I am a consumer of your site, and I think little Google written ads somewhere and perhaps a context-based square image or Flash ad would be good. I’m guessing they would be car ads since your site relates to cars. I like car ads for the most part…. they keep me up to date on the newest cars. But I’m not an expert on placing advertising on a site, and definitely not a WordPress site, so you may want to search on WordPress for ad help.

    • March 25, 2011 at 8:57 am

I noticed the Google ad on one of your pages. It looks decent. It might seem slightly weird because the font seems big, but maybe that’s how it should be. At this point I don’t think it should be too hard to use AdSense to put a Picture Square ad right under your “Email Subscription” to the right and above your “Categories” section. Just another thought. I bet that it will end up being a car ad, which would be cool. In different countries different ads should pop up though.

puerto rico sales? or costa rica sales?

    • January 31, 2011 at 8:14 am

      Hello vaasii,

Thanks very much for your comment.
You can find Costa Rican sales here: https://bestsellingcars.wordpress.com/category/costa-rica/
As for Puerto Rico, it is not an independent state but part of the United States of America, and therefore sales in Puerto Rico are incorporated in the USA sales.
      Hope this helps.

    Great site! Very helpful.
What is the source of your data for Colombia? Thanks

    • January 12, 2011 at 6:02 pm

      Hi Evan,
      Glad you’re enjoying the site.
A couple of sources for Colombia data: es.autoblog.com frequently post car brand rankings in Colombia, model rankings are much rarer, posted around twice a year. http://www.automotriz.net posts monthly general updates for Colombia, the model ranking also appears sometimes, but very rarely not a regular intervals.
I don’t actually have a source that provides the models rankings monthly at this stage. Perhaps you have more regular info about the Colombian models ranking?

Here is a website for Venezuela sales:

    Mexican sales:

This Argentine blog posts Argentina sales each month. They usually post the top 50 a day or two after the month ends, but then they update it a couple days later for all sales:

BTW, I add up all sales of the top automakers worldwide for another site. Please send me an e-mail.

    • December 4, 2010 at 5:55 pm

Thank you very much ausrutherford for these links!
I have mentioned you in my argentinian and mexican articles.
One question: the VW Jetta has improved significantly over the past couple of months in Mexico, to the point of threatening the reign of the Tsuru. Does anyone know whether the figures include the new generation Jetta that just launched (and so in actual fact the figures are the addition of the Jetta Clasico and the Jetta) ? I have assumed so but wouldn’t mind getting this confirmed?

      • December 5, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I believe it includes both. This is because before the new Jetta went on sale, there was a “Jetta” on the sales chart, so i am pretty sure it does.

Was wondering if you had the link to the Turkey site that you have used in the past. I would like to have it.

Also, reguarding Norway november sales. Did you report the top15 because thats all the site provided, or do they have more and you decided not to post more? Reason is, I add up the sales of all models worldwide for the biggest of all the car companies.

Also, forgot to provide this in my last post. These two sites offer sales in Taiwan. Noticed the site you used only did locally built:

This second one updates itself when a new month is reported:

BTW, if you wanted to see Ford’s worldwide sales for October, here they are:

      • December 5, 2010 at 6:00 pm

        Hi Ausrutherford,

Thanks very much for all the info!
I was just wondering whether the growth of the Jetta’s numbers was only due to promotions on the old model (now Jetta Clasico) rather than the addition of the sales of the New Jetta, which may be counted separately. I guess there is no sure way to know that…

Ok so for the Turkey sales I use http://www.e-otodergi.com/index.asp each 5 or 6th of the month they upload a new online magazine so you have to download it and flick through the pages. There are monthly Top 10 for each category, but the ranking is for the month before last eg for teh December issue that will appear tomorrow it is the October sales, not November.

Regarding Norway, I use http://www.ofvas.no and they only publish the Top 20 Year-to-date each month, giving the monthly sales only for the Top 20 year-to-date models. This way you can have models outside of the yearly Top 20 actually ranking within the monthly Top 20 but there is no way to know about them. So to be safe I only publish the Top 15 for the month. The rest of the ranking is: Peugeot 3008 (165), VW Tiguan (162), Volvo V50 (147), Toyota Prius (105), VW Passat (80). Clearly the last 2 are not within the November Top20.

Thanks for the Taiwan links and the Ford worldwide sales, I will look at them now!
