Australia February 2011: Commodore #1, Mazda3 2011 leader

March 5, 2011 1 comment

The Australian car market is still a little bit soft in February at -2% with 80,896 registrations. Queensland sales are down 3% in the wake of the cyclone season but are expected to surge as people replace their damaged vehicles.

The Holden Commodore is #1 for the first time since last October with 3,829 sales and 4.7% share. At #2, the Mazda3 has another very solid month at 3,575 sales and 4.4%, and is rewarded with the #1 spot over the first two months of 2011 with 7,180 sales and 4.6%. A first for the model.

The Toyota Hilux climbs on the podium in 3rd with 3.6%, ahead of the Hyundai i30 (3.3%) and Toyota Corolla, penalised by the end of its financing offer. The Holden Cruze is stable in 6th (3.2%). It will be interesting to follow the Cruze’s behaviour over the next few months as an Australianised model starts production in the Holden Adelaide plant in March.

February 4, 2011 Leave a comment

Traditionally full of surprises as most of the country stops for Summer holidays, January was further disrupted this year in Australia by dramatic floods in Queensland. The market is down 2% at 73,584 registrations, but -13% in Queensland.

Boosted by a 2.9% financing offer with 4,045 sales and 5.5% share, the Toyota Corolla is #1 for the 3rd month in a row, the first time it manages this feat in Australia. In 2nd place, the Mazda3 reaches its best-ever share at 4.9%, and is followed by a weak Holden Commodore at 3.6%. The Subaru Impreza breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #9 with 1,765 sales and 2%.

Holden Commodore & Cruze

The Australian market gains 11% in 2010 at 1,035,574 registrations, the second highest figure ever after 2007’s 1,049,982 units. The Holden Commodore is the best selling car in Australia, as it has been since 1996, with 45,956 sales (+4%) and 4.4%, possibly the nameplate’s lowest ever yearly share. The Commodore was #1 9 times this year, peaking at 5.1% in October.

The Toyota Corolla is #2 with 41,632 sales (+7%) and 4%. Relatively weak most of the year (it even dropped to #4 overall), it had a brilliant last 2 months and was #1 in both November & December when it reached 5.7%, its best share since July 2006. It is followed by the Toyota Hilux at 3.9% (it was #1 in April) and the Mazda3, which at 3.8% is the only model in the Top 4 not to lose share.

Excellent year for the Hyundai i30: +1 spot in 5th with 29,772 sales (+39%). It peaked at #3 and 3.9% in March. The Holden Cruze is the only newbie in the Top 10 in 7th for its first full year with 28,334 sales (2.7%). The Ford Falcon is out of the Top 5 possibly for the first time in the Falcon nameplate’s history.

Australia November 2010: Corolla #1 for the first time this year

December 15, 2010 Leave a comment

Solid numbers in Australia with +2% year-on-year in November at 87,342 registrations and +12% YTD at 948,487. 2010 will be only the third year in history the Australian market is above 1 million units.

In November the Toyota Corolla is #1 for first time in 2010 with 4,536 sales and 5.2% (its best share since July 2009), ahead of the Holden Commodore (3,771 – 4.3%). The very first time the Corolla was on top of Australian monthly sales was in September 2005, and it has been #1 at least twice in the following years: 2006 (2), 2007 (3), 2008 (2) and 2009 (3). In 2010, the model slipped to #4 overall and #2 in its category behind the Mazda3.

With its exceptional November performance, the Corolla jumps back up to #2 overall (behind the Commodore) and leader of its category.

The Holden Cruze gains two spots over October at #5 with 3.1%, both its best position and best share to date, reaching both for the 2nd time in 2010. It is only the second time in 5 years (with September 2010) that Holden places 2 models in the Top 5.

Guatemala 2010: Yaris, Hilux and Aveo on top

December 1, 2010 Leave a comment

The Guatemalan car market is a relatively difficult one to approach as it seems to be quite fragmented. However, 3 models should stand out in the rankings: the Toyota Yaris Sedan, Toyota Hilux and Chevrolet Aveo.

Other strong sellers in Guatemala are the Mazda3, VW Polo, Mitsubishi Lancer, Hyundai Santa Fe, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Mazda B-Series and Hyundai Atos (dedicated to taxis). The Mazda 323 sedan must have been #1 in the country a few years back judging by how many of them are still swarming the streets today. There is also an unusually high number of Volvos in the Guatemala City streets!
