* Many thanks to Matthias from Germany who made this post’s update possible! *
The Albanian car market is very particular, with as much as 1 in every 3 cars in circulation in Tirana and Durres second-hand Mercedes. The best selling new cars are also unique: a mix of luxury SUV’s dominated by the Range Rover, BMW X5, Mercedes M-Class, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes GL-Class!
Only then normal passenger cars follow, among them the Chevrolet Aveo, Fiat Punto, VW Golf and Opel Corsa. A few models have Albania as their only European port of call like the VW Gol, Chery QQ and Toyota Avanza… So a very interesting market indeed.
This rough speculation is based on Matthias’s observations in the streets of Tirana and Durres. Thanks again Matthias!

At 93,984 registrations, Australian car sales are down just 1% year-on-year in March. The Holden Commodore stays #1 at 4,170 sales and 4.4%, but the 2011 leader is still the Mazda3 at 11,159 units and 4.5%, thanks to another strong month at 3,979 sales and 4.2% in March (#3).
The Toyota Hilux takes the 2nd place only 140 sales behind the Commodore. Just behind the Toyota Corolla, the Holden Cruze is up 1 spot at #5 with a strong 3% share, and the Mitsubishi Triton is up to a brilliant 8th position. The Lexus CT (223 sales) and the Toyota FJ Cruiser (209) both appear for the first time in the Australian ranking.
March 2011 will also be remembered as the month Chinese brand Chery started in the country, launching the first Chinese passenger cars in Australia. The Chery J11 SUV (aka Tiggo) delivers 166 sales and the J1 (aka Face) lands 53 buyers. In the meantime the Great Wall V240 ute continues to grow, #64 in Q1 at 989 sales.
A few new models perform well in Q1: the Ford Fiesta is #17, the Hyundai ix35 #28, the Nissan Dualis multiplies its share by two at 1% and #31, the Mistubishi ASX is #50 and the VW Polo #57. No available car sales data for Egypt, so this speculation is the result of my observations in the streets of Cairo and Luxor during my trip to Egypt in December 2008. If you have any more info about the Egyptian market please make sure to get in touch!
At the top of the ranking, the Chevrolet Aveo and the Hyundai Elantra are fighting it out for the 1st place, possibly followed by the Speranza A516. “The what?” I hear you say…
Well. One of the most interesting characteristics of the Egyptian market is the prevalence of Chinese models. Chery cars are built in a former Daewoo plant in Cairo under the brand Speranza (exclusive to Egypt), with significant success: the Speranza A516 (Chery A5) could well be in 3rd position, whereas the A620 (Chery Easter) and A113 (Chery A1) should find a place in the Top 20.
Brilliance cars are relatively common too: the Galena is very likely to be in the Top 15, and the FRV was just starting a promising Egyptian career by the time I was there.
Observation in person during my stay in Laos 5 years ago and through YouTube videos of the streets of Vientiane indicate the Toyota Hilux dominates the car sales in Laos, with even more authority than in neighbouring Thailand where it is built. The Isuzu D-Max is possibly #2.
As far as passenger vehicles are concerned, Korean models seem to be all the rage with the Kia Cerato Forte, Kia Picanto, Hyundai Elantra, Getz & i30 very common. More recent observation by my dear Mum and Dad during their stay in Luang Prabang in January 2011 seem to indicate that Chinese models are starting to be quite successful in the country.

Never before had Argentineans bought that many cars in a year: 662,591 registrations in 2010 is the new record for this market, up 29% on 2009.
In December the VW Amarok (#12, 892 sales) is ranked above the Toyota Hilux (#19, 625 sales) in Argentina for the very first time. With the Single Cab still to be launched, the VW pick-up should see its sales progress further in 2011 and the battle between the two models will be intense.
The Chevrolet Corsa Classic is the best selling car in Argentina in 2010 with 36,058 sales (5.4%), finishing the year with an outstanding 7.8% share in December. The Peugeot 207 Compact is #2 (29,613), ahead of the VW Gol Trend (25,756), Renault Sandero (24,302) and Ford Ecosport (21,389).
