Costa Rica 2010: Daihatsu BeGo Terios possible leader

Daihatsu BeGo Terios in Costa Rica

The Costa Rican car market differs from its neighbours in the fact that Toyota isn’t completely owning the place. Favoured by end consumers and rental car companies alike, the Daihatsu Terios (called BeGo Terios in Costa Rica) could very well be on top of the sales ranking.

The two other very successful models in Costa Rica are the Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Honda Civic. Other cars worth mentioning are the Toyota Hilux, Corolla and Yaris and the Hyundai Accent which, judging by the amount of previous gen Accents in the streets, may have been best-seller in the past.

Toyota Corolla in Lagos, Nigeria May 2010

The Nigerian market is one of the biggest car markets in Africa, and it’s yet another one dominated by Toyota, and particularly the Toyota Corolla: based on the observation of the country’s streets through recent YouTube videos, the model should secure a market share North of 12% in Nigeria.

The podium should be 100% Toyota with the Hilux in 2nd and the Camry in 3rd. Following them could be the 1995 Peugeot 406, still produced in Nigeria, the Toyota Hiace, Kia Rio & Cerato, Hyundai Accent and Honda Civic.

More commentaries and pictures below.

Peugeot 406: originally released in 1995, it is still built in Nigeria.

Qatar 2010: Land Cruiser at 15%+

Car sales in Qatar are pretty easy to decipher as a few models really stand out. The Toyota Land Cruiser is omnipresent in the streets of Doha and should secure no less than 15 to 20% of the Qatari market this year. In #2 we should see the Toyota Corolla around 10%, followed by the Toyota Camry.

The Nissan Tiida could rank 4th ahead of the old gen Mitsubishi Lancer. A bit below should sit the Toyota Hilux and Prado, Mitsubishi L200, Honda Civic and Nissan Altima. Although I am pretty confident about the Top 3, this is still only speculation based on the observation of recent YouTube videos of the streets of Doha. Please get in touch if you have more info!

No surprises, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in the world in 2009, thanks to very strong results in the USA, Japan, China and most of Asia and Africa. 908,661 units of the model were sold in 2009 alone.

The Ford Focus takes the second spot with 781,139 registrations, but this figure is a combination of the European and US versions, which are pretty different cars. Similarly in 3rd, the Ford Fiesta totals 724,502 sales through a couple of different generations on sale across the planet.
