Albania 2011 UPDATED: The land of luxury SUVs

April 28, 2011 5 comments

Range Rover

* Many thanks to Matthias from Germany who made this post’s update possible! *

The Albanian car market is very particular, with as much as 1 in every 3 cars in circulation in Tirana and Durres second-hand Mercedes. The best selling new cars are also unique: a mix of luxury SUV’s dominated by the Range Rover, BMW X5, Mercedes M-Class, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes GL-Class!

Only then normal passenger cars follow, among them the Chevrolet Aveo, Fiat Punto, VW Golf and Opel Corsa. A few models have Albania as their only European port of call like the VW Gol, Chery QQ and Toyota Avanza… So a very interesting market indeed.

This rough speculation is based on Matthias’s observations in the streets of Tirana and Durres. Thanks again Matthias!

Brazil 1954-2009 Historical Data: now updated with more detail

The VW Fusca was #1 in Brazil from 1954 to 1980

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Brazilian car bible Quatro Rodas had the great idea to digitise each of their issues, revealing sales and production figures since 1962! Many thanks to Marcelo de Vasconcellos for the tip!

I have therefore updated all Brazilian Historical Data, with yearly figures now available from 1962 to 2009.

The VW Brasilia was #1 in Brazil for 6 months between 1977 and 1979

You will discover that the 25-year long reign of the VW Fusca (aka Beetle) was threatened in 1977-79 by the VW Brasilia… that the Fiat 147 took the lead from 1981 to 1983 before giving the relay to the Chevrolet Monza up to 1986… and that the 24-year long domination of the VW Gol was in fact interrupted in 1994 by the Fiat Uno for…486 units!

New car sales in Argentina are up for the 17th month in a row at +16% in March with 66,608 registrations. ACARA changes its methodology and doesn’t split models by version anymore, which has a significant impact on the ranking.

The VW Gol takes the first place, with its Trend and Power versions combined selling a total of 4,870 units and 7.3% share, ahead of the Chevrolet Corsa/Classic at 4,062 sales and 6.1%. The Peugeot 207 rounds up the podium at 2,971 sales and 4.5%.

The Ford Ecosport and Renault Sandero are solid at over 3% share, just above the VW Bora in 6th place. Renault has a good month with the Logan up 7 spots on February at #15 and the Fluence up 18 spots at #27 with 815 units.

For its first month of sales, the Peugeot 408 lands directly within the Top 50 at #45 with 420 sales and 0.6% share.

For the first time in months, the Brazilian car market is down: -14% in March at 288,758 registrations. However the year-to-date figure is still up 4% at 777,725 units.

After the Fiat Uno took the first place for the first time last month, the VW Gol reclaims its throne, selling 24,494 units vs. 23,137 for the Uno. 2011 is definitely the year of the Gol-Uno fight! In 3rd the Chevrolet Celta gains 3 spots and one percentage point on February at 4.9% share and 14,045 sales. The Fiat Strada is stable at #5 and the Fiat Palio is up 2 spots at #6.

March 2011 will be remembered as the month the Chinese really landed in Brazil. Until now Chinese brands (Hafei, Chery, Lifan) had adopted a soft start strategy in the country. JAC do Brasil launched with a bang on March 18, which they called J-Day: they inaugurated 50 dealerships across the country simultaneously and hired a famous TV presenter, Fausto Silva, as their ambassador in a multi-million dollar TV campaign. See the TV ad and more about the JAC do Brasil launch here.

JAC J3

The results: the JAC J3 hatchback ranks #100 in March with 324 sales in 10 days, already the best selling Chinese passenger car, and the 3rd best selling Chinese vehicle behind the Hafei Ruiyi and Towner. The JAC J3 Turin sedan sold 131 units. JAC sales target for April have been set at 4,500 units!

1969 Chevrolet Opala: among Brazilian best sellers throughout the seventies

I have now completed a review of the Brazilian market going back to 1954.

Witness the domination of the VW Beetle (called Fusca in Brazil) from 1954 through the sixties and seventies… Explore the 1980’s ‘malaise’ with the Fiat 147 and Chevrolet Monza best sellers… Go through the 23-year reign of the VW Gol, only interrupted by the Fiat Uno in 1994 but challenged by two other Fiats: the Tipo in 1995 and the Palio since 1996.

From 1962 onwards, detailed data is available: yearly Top 15, 20 or 50 and monthly passenger cars Top 50 from 2002. Many thanks to Marcelo de Vasconcellos for your guidance and expertise!

Brazil mid-March 2011: Fiat Uno confirms pole position!

March 18, 2011 Leave a comment

* Thanks to Titus for the tip – see ‘Read more’ below for the Top 100 best selling models *

Growth in Brazil seems to slow down slightly this fortnight at ‘only’ +8% and 142,369 registrations. After making history last month by passing the VW Gol for the first time, the Fiat Uno confirms its new Brazilian king status midway through March with 12,139 sales (8.5%) vs. 10,939 (7.7%) for the Gol.

If this stays the same until the end of the month and the Uno tops the ranking for 2 months in a row, it will be only the second time in 15 years any model apart from the Gol does so…with the Fiat Palio in 2006.
