Australia March 2011: Commodore #1, Lexus CT200 & Chery land Now with the Top 65 best selling models

At 93,984 registrations, Australian car sales are down just 1% year-on-year in March. The Holden Commodore stays #1 at 4,170 sales and 4.4%, but the 2011 leader is still the Mazda3 at 11,159 units and 4.5%, thanks to another strong month at 3,979 sales and 4.2% in March (#3).

The Toyota Hilux takes the 2nd place only 140 sales behind the Commodore. Just behind the Toyota Corolla, the Holden Cruze is up 1 spot at #5 with a strong 3% share, and the Mitsubishi Triton is up to a brilliant 8th position. The Lexus CT (223 sales) and the Toyota FJ Cruiser (209) both appear for the first time in the Australian ranking.

March 2011 will also be remembered as the month Chinese brand Chery started in the country, launching the first Chinese passenger cars in Australia. The Chery J11 SUV (aka Tiggo) delivers 166 sales and the J1 (aka Face) lands 53 buyers. In the meantime the Great Wall V240 ute continues to grow, #64 in Q1 at 989 sales.

A few new models perform well in Q1: the Ford Fiesta is #17, the Hyundai ix35 #28, the Nissan Dualis multiplies its share by two at 1% and #31, the Mistubishi ASX is #50 and the VW Polo #57. With the discontinuation of the the Falcon model last year, the Ford Mondeo is now the default Ford station wagon and is up to #39.

Panama March 2011: Toyota Hilux leads, Nissan Navara strong

After a very strong showing by the Hyundai Tucson IX late last year, the Toyota Hilux reclaims the title of best selling vehicle in Panama over the first 3 months of 2011 with 693 sales, 127 units above the Tucson.

The Hyundai Accent GL is stable in 3rd place, the Nissan Navara is up 4 spots at #4 with 386 sales, same as the Toyota RAV4, #5 with 383 sales. The Hyundai Elantra reappears in the Top 10 at #7.

South Africa March 2011: Hilux leads, Nissan NP200 in Top10

The South African car market continues on its great run, up 23% in March at 53,478 units. The Toyota Hilux stays on top and improves its market share to 7%, leaving the VW Polo Vivo behind at 5.2%. The Toyota Corolla/Auris climbs on the podium at 4.6%.

The two luxury sedans produced locally stay strong: the Mercedes C Class is #8 at 1,342 sales (2.5%) and the BMW 3 Series is #11 at 1,169 sales (2.2%). The Nissan NP200 (aka Dacia Logan pick-up) lands within the Top10 for the first time ever at 1,264 units, and the Nissan Micra has its first month of sales at #26 (392 sales).

New Zealand March 2011: Toyota Hilux and Corolla on top

The New Zealand car market is up 18% at 8,260 registrations in March. The Toyota Hilux grabs the top spot with an impressive 514 sales and 6.2% share, ahead of the Toyota Corolla at 355 units (4.3%) and the Suzuki Swift at 307 sales (3.7%). The Nissan Navara and Toyota Yaris follow.

South Africa February 2011: Hilux back on top, Polo Vivo #2

Great result again for South African car sales, up 25% in February at 49,164 registrations. The Toyota Hilux climbs back on top with 6.2% of the market, just above the VW Polo Vivo at 6% and a Toyota Yaris in excellent shape at 5.2%.

The new VW Polo is down slightly at #4 with 3.5% share, followed by the Toyota Corolla/Auris at 3.1%. Great performance of the Audi A1 coming in directly at #25 with 395 sales and 0.8%. Honda launches the City under the name Ballade and secures 52 sales.

Australia February 2011: Commodore #1, Mazda3 2011 leader

The Australian car market is still a little bit soft in February at -2% with 80,896 registrations. Queensland sales are down 3% in the wake of the cyclone season but are expected to surge as people replace their damaged vehicles.

The Holden Commodore is #1 for the first time since last October with 3,829 sales and 4.7% share. At #2, the Mazda3 has another very solid month at 3,575 sales and 4.4%, and is rewarded with the #1 spot over the first two months of 2011 with 7,180 sales and 4.6%. A first for the model.

The Toyota Hilux climbs on the podium in 3rd with 3.6%, ahead of the Hyundai i30 (3.3%) and Toyota Corolla, penalised by the end of its financing offer. The Holden Cruze is stable in 6th (3.2%). It will be interesting to follow the Cruze’s behaviour over the next few months as an Australianised model starts production in the Holden Adelaide plant in March.

South Africa January 2011: Polo Vivo back to #1, Figo #4

The South African car market continues its good run, up 19% in January with 45,135 sales. Volkswagen has a good month with the Polo Vivo back in the first spot at 2,986 sales and 6.6%, leaving the Toyota Hilux behind at 2,626 sales and 5.8%, and the new Polo in 3rd place at 1,702 sales (3.8%).

The Ford Figo (based on the previous generation Fiesta) is very impressive in 4th position with 1,682 sales and 3.7%. The locally-produced Mercedes C Class is back up 5th with a very solid 2.8% share.
