The Malaysian car market has another solid month in March at 61,313 registration. First Quarter 2011 figures are up 8% year-on-year at 153,643 units. The Perodua Myvi is #1 again this month at 14% share, followed by the Proton Saga at 13.1% and the Perodua Viva at a slightly weaker than usual 9.8%.
The Proton Persona is in good shape at #4 with 8.2%, same for the Mitsubishi Triton at #11 with 1.8%. The Proton Inspira slips down to 1.8% compared to 2.4% last month. Duty-free prices have made hybrid cars more affordable this year in Malaysia and the effect is immediate: the Honda Insight jumps 18 spots this month to #14 at 896 sales and 1.5%.

The facelifted Proton Saga comes in at #2 with 5,314 sales and a solid 13.5% market share, one percentage point above its 2010 level. The Perodua Viva is up from a slightly weaker January.
The entire Top 6 best selling models is unchanged vs. January and vs. 2010. Further down the ranking, the Nissan Grand Livina is back into the Top 10 whereas the Proton Inspira is down one spot at #11. The new Ford Fiesta continues its progression and breaks into the Top 20 at #19 and 328 sales.

Solid first month of the year in Malaysia at 53,114 registrations, and Proton is back in shape with the Saga (helped by the facelifted FL model) back in #2 7,128 sales and 13.4% share, only 48 units below the Perodua Myvi. The entire Top 9 is identical to the general 2010 ranking so no surprises there.
The new Proton Inspira (a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer) breaks into the Top 10 at its 3rd month of sales with 1,370 units changing hands in January for a 2.6% market share (#10).
Also to be noticed is the 11th place of the Nissan Teana, by far its best score in Malaysia, and the arrival of the Peugeot 207 Sedan (in fact a 206+), “the first Peugeot for ASEAN”, in the Top 30 with 298 sales.
