China 2002: VW Jetta, Santana and Santana 2000 on podium
1,225,240 new cars were sold in China in 2002, and as it has been the case for almost a decade the VW Jetta and Santana fight it out for the first place. This year the VW Jetta is the best selling car in China with 121,128 units sold or nearly 10% market share.
The 17-year-old VW Santana takes the 2nd place with just under 100,000 sales (98,663 to be precise) and 8.1% share. Right on its heels is its modern version, the Santana 2000, at an impressive 95,117 sales or 7.8% share. The two models continue to be ranged and there are no plans to discontinue the veteran Santana.
In 4th place is the Tianjin Xiali, based on the 1987 Daihatsu Charade, with 83,720 units sold, just above the VW Passat at 78,794 sales. The 1991 Citroen ZX is 7th with 53,183 sales.
