Thailand Full Year 2010: Toyota Hilux leads with 144,000 sales

February 4, 2011 2 comments

No surprises in Thailand: the Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in the country with 144,190 sales, ahead of the Isuzu D-Max at 133,766. Both pick-ups add up to nearly 278,000 registrations, or around 35% of the total Thai car market!

The Toyota Vios is the best-selling passenger car at 67k units, followed by the Honda City at 49k units and the Toyota Corolla Altis at 38k. Being the world’s pick-up heaven, the Thai market had to have two more of those in the Top 10: the Nissan Frontier at #7 (23,844 sales) and the Mitsubishi Triton at #9 (20,344).

Two new models climb into the Top 10 this year in Thailand: the Mazda2 is 8th with 22,537 sales, and the Nissan March is #10 at 18,367. Many thanks to Chips Yap from Motor Trader Malaysia for sharing the figures! Full Top 10 Ranking Table below.

Thailand 10 months 2010: Hilux & Isuzu D-Max over 100k sales

January 15, 2011 Leave a comment

Thai car sales continue their fantastic run this year, up 50% over the first 10 months 2010 at 628,361. The Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max are still distant leaders with 112,225 and 105,604 sales respectively, followed by the Toyota Vios (53,220), Honda City (37,859) and Toyota Corolla Altis, the most dynamic of the 3 passenger cars at +45% (29,617 sales).

Access to 8- & 10-months 2010 cumulative figures allow the isolation of a September/October 2010 ranking in which the Hilux and D-Max are much closer at 16.7 and 16.2% share respectively, the Vios is very strong at 9.6% in 3rd, and the new locally-produced Nissan March (Micra) jumps up to 6th with 5,057 sales and 3.6%, just ahead of the Honda Civic.

Many thanks to my dear Mum and Dad who uncovered these figures in the ‘Formula’ car magazine during their stay in Thailand in January 2011.

Nissan March

The Thai market is recovering from the crisis at full speed: the first 8 months 2010 are at +56% vs. ’09 at 488.088 registrations! The Top 4 is stable: Toyota Hilux (20%), Isuzu D-Max (15%), Toyota Vios (8%) and Honda City (6%) dominate the sales. The Corolla Altis regains the advantage on the Honda Civic in 5th.

Two models that recently kicked-off production in the country pop up in the ranking. The Mazda2 is #8 with 15,431 sales, including 7,404 sedans. The Nissan March new gen, whose first unit in the world came out of the Samut Prakan plant last March, is #12 with 9,527 sales (a monthly rate equivalent to a Top 10 position), the rest being shipped to Japan, SE Asia and Australia.

Many thanks to my dear Mum and Dad who uncovered these figures in the Thai press while staying in the country in November 2010.

Thailand is the ‘pick-up factory of the world’: most pick-up trucks are actually built in the country, and it shows in the model ranking: the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max fight it out for the 1st spot. Over 11 months 2008 the Toyota is ahead with an astounding 20.4% market share, ahead of the Isuzu’s 19.7%. Yes, you read it right, these two models account for no less than 40.1% of the entire Thai car market…

Toyota also leads the passenger car segment with the Vios (aka Yaris sedan) at 7.3% and the Corolla Altis at 5.2%. Honda places the Civic in 5th and the Jazz in 7th, whereas the new City, only a few months old, is already 11th with 10,907 sales and 2% of the market.

Two more pick-ups are in the Top 10: the Nissan Frontier in 6th (3.9%) and the Mitsubishi Triton in 8th (3%).
